Prelim Edit

Audition Video

Personal Achievement

I want to get an experience of being on set and seeing how it is managed by the director and how all the different teams of people work together.

I have found the Prelim a challenge as our role as actors requires us to perform as actors and dancers, something I have never done before in front of a camera.

So far I have gained a lot of acting and lip sync skills and tricks.

My Role

I was casted as blue pool girl. I feel happy about this role

The performance consists of a routine on the deck chairs, swaying with the guitars, and dancing. In the music video she is in the role of a ditzy supermodel, however for our cover it was changed to happy, powerful girls.

The dancing was a little out of my comfort zone however I feel happy with this role after the training sessions we have had.

My Costume

The aim: Beach wear, blue everything.

I borrowed a blue halter neck top from my friend. I had a blue skirt and neutral coloured heels and the school hired the blue swimming cap.

1. Did you enjoy the workshop day? What were your best bits and why?

I really enjoyed the workshop day these were my best bits:

Performing, as I found that in the moment, with costume, hair and make up and with the music playing, that the nerves leading up to the performance had gone.

Going up to lighting and seeing how they had made different lighting schemes for each scene and could easily flick between them.

Just being on a professional shoot and seeing it come together.

2. What have you learnt from participating in each of the prelim tasks?

Audition Video

This was my first experience with performing in front of camera dancing and lip syncing, and from watching it back I learnt that the for it to look good you have to not be self conscious.

In the editing process Vivian and I leant that the best way to edit a remake of something where you have to match the lip-sync to a track it is best to look at the performance beds of the clip and match that to the track.

Leaning and Practicing Your Performance

I found that the rehearsals were good as the coaches taught us many helpful tricks and tips on how to achieve the dance routines.

From this I learnt to just bring in lots of options and ask people.

The Shoot

From the shoot I learnt to care and time that is required to get the best footage and that it is not a quick process and that it is really important to work as a team and be alert and ready for doing tasks such as set changes. I also learnt about the more technical aspect in lighting.

The Edit

I learnt many new skills in the edit, in particular grading and using this to create the effect of flashing lights. I also got much more confident in matching the lipsync to the track since the audition video.

3. Are you pleased with the footage and your edit? Is it how you expected it to look?

Footage

I feel very pleased with the footage, after watching the actors and the props on set I did think that it would look good but seeing the rushes in video form made it look even more similar to the real video.

Edit

When putting the shots together we found that the bike scene had many continuity errors, which was partly due to the fact that we had to replace the car with a bike as we would not be able to get a car into the studio. However I think it still managed to portray the same story line and sense of that scene. Overall I think the final edit is a successful remake of the original, and when watching them side by side I think the attention to detail such as eye and body movement is really impressive.

4. How do you think your prelim experiences will impact on your approach to next terms music video coursework?

My prelim experiences have taught me many performance skills such as acting, lip syncing and dancing that I would be able to use in next terms coursework.

I have also gained an insight into the conceptual ideas behind music videos. The idea behind "Girls" was not based on the story of the song but made a different point- mocking the formula that many music videos now follow of over sexualising girls.

Furthermore I also feel like I now have a good base of editing skills that I can apply to our own music video next year such as matching the lip sync and the track. Also from editing I got a feel of the choppy fast paced style of music videos.

I also strongly feel that the studio should be ustilised for some part of the music video next year ( which I didn't before) as I have now seen the extent of its capabilities and I think it is key to producing a professional video.
